The purpose of the foundation is to seek a world where everyone has the opportunity to learn and prosper. The foundation’s work is guided by its mission to advance learning and promote financial inclusion for people living in poverty.


Established in 2006 - The foundation was established in 2006 by Mastercard International and operates independently under the governance of its own Board of Directors. The foundation’s headquarters are in Toronto, Canada. One of the largest foundations in the world, Mastercard Foundation works almost exclusively in Africa. It is currently working with 132 partners in 33 countries.

Grantmaking Programs

MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program

The program provides education and leadership development for more than 35,000 bright, young leaders with a deep personal commitment to changing the world around them and improving the lives of others. Through a network of universities and non-governmental organizations, the program ensures that students whose academic talent and promise exceed their financial resources are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to become the next generation of ethical leaders. The scholarship covers support for education and living costs, as well as wrap around support services including mentorship and leadership development.

COVID-19 Economic Recovery and Resilience Response Program

Formed in partnership with Private Sector Foundation Uganda, the program will extend immediate relief, recovery and resilience interventions to counter the impact of COVID-19.
